Field Trips


Field Trips to Ocean Live Park

Sail Newport is hosting the third Ocean Race Stopover [previously Volvo Ocean Race], May 13-21, 2023. Ocean Live Park will be open for school groups from Monday, May 15 through Friday, May 19, 2023. We invite you to plan your trip for the new 2023 Ocean Live Park race village experience. Students will be able to explore the team bases, sustainability exhibits, view the race boats close up at the docks, Try Sailing Experience, and the One Blue Voice. In addition to the Ocean Live Park field trips, Sail Newport will run professional development days (see above) for all teachers to learn and utilize the Ocean Race Learning Program Curriculum. 2023 Lakes - Student Poster Contest

July has been Lakes Appreciation Month for the past 25 years; to celebrate, we are inviting elementary, middle, and high school students to submit posters reflecting on how important lakes are to all of us. Submitted artwork will be a big part of NALMS’ celebrations through July across North America. Show us your love for lakes by sending us your artwork!

Posters will be judged by grade range, with a winning poster in each division - elementary (grades K-4), middle (grades 5-8), and high school (9-12):

  • A $250 cash prize will be awarded to the three winning artists’ schools! Schools are encouraged to utilize these funds for STEM or lake ecology curriculum/materials, activities, and/or field trips.

  • A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the three winning student artists!

  • Winning submissions will be featured on the NALMS website, e-newsletter, and social media channels.

  • Help NALMS Spread the Word!

Poster Contest: Grateful for Clean Water

Students in K-6 who reside in Providence, North Providence, Johnston, Central Falls, Lincoln, Pawtucket, Cumberland, Cranston, Smithfield, or East Providence are invited to create a poster to illustrate a way that they are grateful for clean water.  This contest is sponsored by the Narragansett Bay Commission.  Posters are due by May 5th.  Full rules and contest details can be found here.


Naval Horizons STEM Essay Contest to Win $200

Introduce high school and college students to cutting-edge STEM topics impacting the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps through an engaging video series.

Students are invited to watch the videos to learn about Naval STEM challenges and the scientists and engineers tackling them.  Then students are tasked to write a 500-word essay explaining how the research presented in the video and the STEM professional inspired them and their thoughts on the future of the STEM topic.

Up to 5,000 winners will be selected and receive a $200 cash prize!

The submission period for the contest is officially open for college and high school students who are U.S. citizens, and essays are accepted until May 29, 2023, at 11:59 PM ET.


Emerging 2023: April 29 – May 20

Warwick Center for the Arts (WCFA) is seeking original works for our upcoming Emerging 2023, an exhibition featuring artists aged 14-22, which will run from April 29, 2023 – May 20, 2023. As the world around us continues to rapidly change and evolve, we look to the younger generation to show us the world through their eyes. All themes and media will be considered, including work created in school, under the guidance of an instructor, or independently. The show will be juried by a panel of art educators.  This is a wonderful opportunity for young artists to have their work shown at a gallery for public viewing.

ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS:  Works must be original and completed during the last 24 months; previously submitted works will not be accepted.  Visit www.warwickcfa.org  for more information.  Three “Excellence Awards” will be presented at the opening reception. Additional “Honorable Mentions” will also be presented at the WCFA’s discretion. The WCFA reserves the right to add additional awards.

Food Science Camp at Roger Williams University- July 23-28 (overnight camp)

During this 6-day overnight camp, students in grades 9-11 will learn what it is like to be a RWU Hawk as they explore the science of cuisine in a state-of-the-art laboratory setting. Each afternoon, snacks prepared by RWU’s nationally recognized chefs will be paired with the lab activities so that students may sample tasty examples of the science studied.  Topics will include the microbiology of bread and fermentation, the chemistry of preserves like pickles and jams, and engineering the perfect milkshake.  Students will also spend time in RWU’s on campus gardens and get a behind the scenes tour of our shellfish hatchery.  The week will be filled with a delectable swirl of science and food, with students gaining skills in both food preparation and laboratory science.  Get more information here.


2023 Ocean Science Exploration Camp Registration is Open!

The Inner Space Center at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography is excited to announce the details for its Summer 2023 Ocean Science Exploration Camp! During this week-long day camp, activities will focus on the geology and chemistry of coastal environments. Through a variety of hands-on activities, demonstrations, and field investigations, campers will survey the geological features of coastal Rhode Island, investigate global cycles of key elements, and explore potential impacts of climate change and marine pollutants on the ocean’s ecosystems. 

The ISC will again be offering two weeks of Ocean Science Exploration Camp: one week for middle schoolers (rising 6th - 8th graders), from July 10- 14, 2023; and one for high school students (rising 9th - 11th graders), from July 17-21, 2023. 

Cost: $495, the ISC is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to campers that require financial assistance to attend camp.

 RIC GenCyber 2023 - A Rhode Island Online Beginners Cybersecurity Camp

GenCyber cybersecurity camp is back for Summer 2023. If you are interested in studying computer science and cybersecurity, the Rhode Island College GenCyber Cybersecurity Camp is for you. No experience necessary!

  • June 19 - July 7, 2023 (pre-camp “warm up” activities to get ready for camp). These activities are to be completed at your own pace, when you have time.

  • July 10 - 14, 2023 (Working together online between 8:30-3:30 with fun activities and lots of built-in games and breaks)

Rising high school Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors interested in learning about cybersecurity are invited. The camp is fully funded via a National Security Agency (NSA) grant, so it is totally free for students. Each student will be given an Arduino, a camp T-shirt and backpack and many other goodies.  There will also be awards and prizes earned throughout the week.  To be accepted to the camp, you must be willing to commit to the full three weeks of pre-camp (fun asynchronous activities as well as attend the synchronous week of activities.  In return you will receive a GenCyber certificate (along with other awards/prizes) at the end of the camp. We will also have fun follow-on activities in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 to keep the learning going.  Since the camp is held online, students must also have access to the Internet.  Get more details and apply here.
